APC Campaign DG Abdulaziz Yari says Atiku’s promise to restore petrol subsidy is false. He claims subsidy would cost N20 trillion yearly and that APC will run on facts and achievements.

The *2027 election campaign* is already heating up — and petrol subsidy is back at the center of it.

*Abdulaziz Yari*, Director-General of the *APC Presidential Campaign Council*, has accused *Atiku Abubakar*, presidential candidate of the *African Democratic Congress, ADC*, of _“lying to Nigerians”_ over his promise to restore petrol subsidy.

Yari made the remarks on *August 29, 2026* while receiving *Seyi Tinubu* and members of the *City Boy Movement* in Abuja.

What Atiku Proposed

Atiku recently said an *ADC-led government would fully restore petrol subsidy*, but clarified it won’t be the old import-subsidy regime.

According to him, the new plan would be:

– *Targeted and capped*

– *Transparently budgeted*

– *Independently audited*

– Focused on supporting *domestic refining and production*

“There is no arbitrary withdrawal date. As domestic refining expands, supply stabilises… the intervention progressively becomes unnecessary,” Atiku explained.

Yari’s Response: “There Was No Provision in 2023 Budget”

Yari, a former Zamfara State Governor, dismissed the proposal outright.

“There was no provision for subsidy in the 2023 budget. How is it going to happen? Definitely, whoever is there, the first thing he is going to do was removal. And anybody who is deceiving Nigerians must say, ‘I am going to bring this thing back,’ is lying.”

He went further, alleging that the *NNPCL has failed to provide convincing data* on national fuel consumption despite repeated demands.

“This is about N20 trillion for a year. Where is it going? We don’t know. Nobody can tell you exactly how many litres we need or the quantity per day,” Yari said.

APC’s 2027 Strategy: “Facts and Figures

Yari said the APC will not focus on attacking opponents in 2027. Instead, the party will campaign on *data and the Tinubu administration’s record*.

“By God’s grace, we have the data. This is what we are going to do in our campaigns: facts and figures. What we have done, what we have achieved, and what we intend to do in the future,” he stated.

He also defended the Tinubu government’s spending on *infrastructure and security*, saying _“significant resources”_ have gone into arms, ammunition and security operations.

What This Means For 2027

With subsidy, cost of living, and economic reforms dominating public debate, expect it to be a major campaign issue.

Atiku is pitching a “targeted subsidy” to cushion the impact of reforms.

APC is pitching “no subsidy, but results” and questioning the numbers behind it.

As Yari put it: “Names are not important to us. Rather, what we are going to do for Nigerians and what we have been doing for the past three years.
