Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori flagged off NDDC’s reconstruction of the Benin-Sapele Expressway. The 15.4km project aims to end gridlock and boost connectivity in the Niger Delta.

Relief is coming for motorists and truck drivers on the *Benin-Sapele Expressway*.

On *August 28, 2026*, Delta State Governor, *Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori*, flagged off the *reconstruction of the Benin-Sapele Expressway* being handled by the *Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC*.

The flag-off ceremony took place at *Amukpe Roundabout* in Delta State.

Why The Benin-Sapele Road Reconstruction Matters

For years, the 15.4km stretch between *Benin, Ologbo Junction and Sapele* has been a nightmare for commuters.

The road had become unmotorable, causing days-long gridlock, hardship for travelers, and crippling the local economy.

*Dr. Victor Antai*, NDDC Executive Director of Projects, said the section is _“a strategic road in the region”_ and its condition had made movement of goods and people extremely difficult.

*Governor Oborevwori*, represented by *Mr. Charles Aniagwu*, Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, commended NDDC for its partnership with the 9 Niger Delta states.

> “As a government, we remain open to partnerships with the NDDC to promote sustainable development and improve the livelihood of the people,” Aniagwu stated.
> He also commended President *Bola Ahmed Tinubu* for policies under the _Renewed Hope Agenda_.

*Mr. Chiedu Ebie*, NDDC Governing Board Chairman, said the intervention reflects NDDC’s commitment to complementing the Federal Government in restoring critical infrastructure across the Niger Delta.

*Dr. Samuel Ogbuku*, NDDC Managing Director, said the Commission _“shares in the pains of motorists”_ who have suffered on the Benin-Sapele corridor and other bad spots on the East-West Road.

Following a presidential directive, Ogbuku confirmed that *two civil engineering firms have been mobilized* to fast-track reconstruction.

> “This will help minimize the suffering and gridlock faced by commuters,” Ogbuku said.
> He urged communities to be patient, assuring that the project, to be supervised by the *Federal Ministry of Works*, will provide a lasting solution.

*Dr. Victor Antai* added that NDDC and the Ministry of Works agreed to ensure the reconstruction conforms to the road’s original design.

*Hon. Erhiatake Ibori-Suenu*, Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on NDDC, thanked President Tinubu for responding to the cries of the people.

She noted that reconstructing the road will ensure *free movement of goods and people from Delta to Edo, Bayelsa, and Rivers States*, boosting trade across the region.

NDDC has already mobilized contractors to begin work immediately. The goal is to complete repairs quickly and restore smooth traffic flow on one of the busiest corridors in the South-South.
