The Federal Government has declared Tuesday, August 25, 2026, a public holiday to mark this year’s Eid-ul-Mawlid, the commemoration of the birth of the Holy Prophet Muhammad.

The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, announced the holiday on Friday in a statement issued by the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Dr. Magdalene Ajani.

In the statement, Mr. Tunji-Ojo extended felicitations to Muslims in Nigeria and in the diaspora. He urged citizens to reflect on the values of compassion, humility and service exemplified in the life of the Prophet.

“Every Eid-ul-Mawlid gives us reason to pause and draw lessons from a life defined by compassion, humility and service to others. These are qualities our nation needs now more than ever, and I encourage every Nigerian, not only our Muslim brothers and sisters, to reflect on them,” the minister said.

He also called on Nigerians to use the occasion to pray for peace and national cohesion, noting that the sustenance of unity remains a collective responsibility.

The minister further advised citizens to observe the celebration with moderation and mutual respect, and wished the Muslim community a peaceful and joyous Eid.

Mr. Tunji-Ojo reaffirmed the commitment of the present administration to the protection of lives and property, and to the maintenance of peace and security across the country.
