Fact Check: Peter Obi Is Not Godfather To Any Of Soludo’s Children – Anambra First Lady’s Aide Clarifies

The media office of the Anambra State First Lady, Dr Nonye Soludo, has dismissed claims by former Anambra governor Peter Obi that he and his wife are godparents to Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s children.

Peter Obi, who is the presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress, had made the claim on Friday at the 22nd Conference of the Nigerian Guild of Editors in Enugu. Obi said despite their political differences, he and Soludo remain close.

According to Obi, “People might not know, my wife and I are godparents to Soludo’s children. Yes, we are that close. So we are not quarrelling, and we will never quarrel.”

The video of the statement went viral on social media, prompting several calls to the First Lady’s office for clarification.

Reacting on Saturday, September 26, 2026, the media aide to the Anambra First Lady, Daniel Ezeigwe, said the claim is false and misleading.

In a statement released by the First Lady’s office, Ezeigwe said Peter Obi is not a godfather to any of the children of Governor Chukwuma Soludo and Dr Nonye Soludo.

He clarified the actual godparent relationship between the two families to set the record straight.

According to the statement, Dr Nonye Soludo is the confirmation godmother to Peter Obi’s daughter, while Mrs Margaret Obi, wife of Peter Obi, is the baptismal godmother to one of Governor Soludo’s daughters.

The statement added that neither Peter Obi nor Professor Soludo has ever served as a godparent to each other’s children.

The First Lady’s aide noted that it is possible Peter Obi misspoke while making his remarks, but due to the wide circulation of the video, it became necessary to correct the public impression.

He stressed that the relationship between the Soludo and Obi families remains cordial and there is no need to misrepresent it.

The office urged members of the public, the media and all concerned to disregard any impression that Peter Obi is a godfather to any of Governor Soludo’s children.
