President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has declared that Nigeria has passed through its own Red Sea and is now entering an era of prosperity.
Tinubu made the declaration in his Independence Day address to the nation on Wednesday, October 1, 2026, to mark Nigeria’s 66th Independence anniversary with the theme From Reforms To Prosperity.
In the address, the President said the country’s journey since 1960 has not been easy, noting that the nation has endured war, military rule, economic crises, insecurity and political upheaval, but has continued to endure through the spirit of its people.
He paid tribute to farmers, traders, teachers, entrepreneurs and members of the Armed Forces and security services, saying their sacrifice sustains the nation.
Tinubu said for too long, Nigeria’s promise was undermined by choices that postponed difficult decisions and allowed economic distortions to grow, adding that by 2023 poverty was rising and hope was nearly gone.
He likened Nigeria’s situation to a cancer patient who must choose between painful treatment that offers recovery or taking morphine to dull the pain while the disease spreads.
According to him, previous leaders chose morphine, spending enormous sums sustaining inefficient arrangements that were never intended to last, while his administration chose to excise the cancer.
The President stated that the reforms introduced by his administration since 2023 were difficult and had real side effects, but insisted that the reforms did not create the weaknesses in the economy but confronted them.
He said three and a half years later, evidence of economic improvement is undeniable, citing over 4 percent growth this year, decline in oil theft, fall in inflation, rebuilt foreign reserves, stabilized foreign exchange market and highest non-oil export revenue in history exceeding 6 billion dollars in 2025.
Tinubu declared that the emergency treatment is over and the foundation has been repaired, adding that the central task has now changed from correcting the nation’s course to delivering shared and widespread prosperity.
He explained that prosperity means a Nigeria where farmers can cultivate safely and earn decent returns, factories have reliable power, businesses can access credit, young people can find jobs, food and transportation are affordable and families can look to the future with confidence.
To bring down cost of living, Tinubu said his government is focusing on mechanised irrigation and dry-season farming, improved access to seeds and fertiliser, storage and transportation, and building roads, railways and ports to connect farms and factories to markets.
On jobs, he said Nigeria’s youthful population must become an engine of production, assuring that his administration will use gas to power new industries, support factories, expand digital connectivity and invest in skills.
The President acknowledged that millions of Nigerians still struggle for food, school fees and medical bills, saying their struggle is the accumulated consequence of decades of low productivity and weak institutions, not just the last three years of reforms.
He said his administration is strengthening direct support for poorest households, improving the National Social Register, sustaining the Nigerian Education Loan Fund, NELFUND, for students, and expanding CREDICORP for consumer credit to acquire vehicles, solar systems and digital devices.

Tinubu added that his government has paid salaries and pensions on time and in full since 2023 and reformed the national pension program to benefit retirees and the vulnerable.
He stressed that the objective is not to manage poverty more efficiently but to defeat it, noting it will take time and discipline but Nigeria now embarks on the task from a position of strength.
The President said the age of reform has done its work and now begins the age of prosperity, urging Nigerians not to look back after crossing the Red Sea.
He said Nigeria’s destination is a nation of abundance and opportunity where prosperity is broadly shared and every child can dream beyond circumstances of birth.
The President concluded by wishing Nigerians a happy Independence Day and praying for God’s blessing on the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
