Why Nigerians Abroad Cannot Vote Yet: Diaspora Centre, NIDCOM To Hold Webinar Thursday

The African Diaspora Resource and Research Centre, University of Ibadan in collaboration with the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission NIDCOM will on Thursday September 24 2026 hold a webinar on diaspora voting in Nigeria.

This was disclosed in a press release issued by NIDCOM on September 23 2026 in Abuja.

According to the statement, the monthly seminar series is themed Do Migrants Vote and will examine why Nigeria despite growing population of its citizens abroad has not enacted a legal framework to allow them vote.

The webinar will focus on political participation, voting rights and enfranchisement of Nigerians living outside the country.

The lead speaker for the session is Dr Olaolu Peter Oluwasanmi who will speak on Nigerian State and the Politics of Diaspora Disenfranchisement.

Other participants include Dr Abdulrahman Terab, Head of Technology, Transfer, Innovation and Investment at NIDCOM who will serve as discussant, while Dr Jermaine Sanwo-Olu, Executive Secretary of Lagos State Office of Diaspora Affairs will moderate the session.

The webinar is being hosted by the Director of the Centre and Professor of Diaspora Studies, Professor Senayon Olaoluwa alongside other scholars.

NIDCOM said its involvement in the seminar reflects its commitment to promoting informed dialogue on issues affecting Nigerians in diaspora and deepening diaspora engagement in national development.

The virtual seminar is scheduled for 4 pm West African Time on Thursday September 24 2026.
