L-R: Wike and Amaechi

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has criticised former Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, for attributing his mother’s death to the economic policies of President Bola Tinubu.

Wike said it was wrong for Amaechi to bring his late mother into political debate to gain sympathy.

He spoke on Saturday when he addressed members of the Uzugbani Ekpeye National Executive Council at Ekpeye House in Ahoada, Ahoada East Local Government Area of Rivers State.

Amaechi had claimed during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Friday that Tinubu’s policies contributed to the death of his mother because he could not afford her drugs due to rising cost of medicines.

In his words, Amaechi said before Tinubu came his mother was healthy, but after 2023 it became difficult for him to buy drugs for his mother.

Reacting, Wike questioned how someone who served as Speaker of Rivers State House of Assembly for eight years, governor for eight years, and Minister of Transportation for eight years could claim he could not buy drugs for his mother.

Wike also questioned why Amaechi could not get support from his associates and family who attended the burial, including those he said own private jets, to help with the medical bills while his mother was alive.

The FCT minister further faulted Amaechi for saying in a video that his mother would be happy if the ADC wins the 2027 election, describing it as bringing a deceased loved one into politics.

According to Wike, it is unfortunate for people to descend so low to use their mother to play politics, and he prayed for the late woman to rest in peace.

Amaechi’s mother, Mary Amaechi, died in July 2026 and was buried in September in Ubima, Rivers State. The burial was attended by several prominent political figures.

The exchange is the latest in the long-standing political rivalry between Wike and Amaechi, both former governors of Rivers State.
