Union Bank Secures PCI DSS v4.0.1 Certification for Card Data Security
LAGOS, Nigeria— Union Bank of Nigeria has obtained certification under the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard version 4.0.1, effective 11 August 2026, in a move that affirms compliance with the global benchmark for the protection of payment card account data.
PCI DSS v4.0.1 establishes technical and operational requirements for organisations that store, process or transmit cardholder information. The certification confirms that Union Bank meets those requirements for credit and debit card data, and is intended to strengthen defences against data breaches and payment fraud while reinforcing customer confidence.
The scope of the assessment covered the bank’s network infrastructure as well as card issuance, ATM and point-of-sale transaction acquiring, payment processing, reconciliation, settlement, chargeback, dispute resolution and retail banking operations. Union Bank was certified in the Service Provider category.
The process spanned 12 months and included quarterly reviews. It was coordinated across departments with support from cybersecurity firm Digital Encode. The final independent audit was conducted by CyberCube, an accredited Qualified Security Assessor.
Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Yetunde B. Oni said the certification reflects the bank’s priority on customer data protection.
“The security of our customers’ information is central to everything we do at Union Bank,” Oni said. “This certification reaffirms that our payment systems and processes meet a rigorous global standard, and it reflects the discipline of colleagues across the Bank who work every day to keep customer data safe.”
The renewal maintains Union Bank’s continuous PCI DSS certification, in line with the Central Bank of Nigeria’s directive that banks sustain compliance without interruption.
