55-Year-Old Driver Survives As Train Crushes Car At PWD In Lagos
There was panic at PWD railway crossing in Lagos on Friday morning after a moving train collided with a Honda car, leaving the vehicle badly damaged.
The driver, a 55-year-old man, however escaped without any injury.
The incident was confirmed by the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, LASTMA, in a statement signed by its Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment, Adebayo Taofiq.
According to LASTMA, the train was heading towards Agege when it hit the car with registration number EKY 902 JT at the PWD rail line.
The agency said the car was almost completely damaged as a result of the impact but no life was lost.
Notwithstanding the severity of the impact and the considerable destruction sustained by the vehicle, the motorist miraculously escaped without any reported injury, with no casualty recorded at the scene, the statement said.
LASTMA disclosed that in an earlier traffic update at 7:20am, onlookers had pushed the car off the tracks while its officers managed traffic and emergency responders attended to the scene.
Its operatives alongside security personnel rescued the driver and facilitated the removal of the wrecked vehicle from the railway track to allow the train resume its journey to Agege.
Despite clearing the track, traffic congestion persisted around the PWD axis after the accident.
The wrecked car has been handed over to security personnel for further investigation into the cause of the collision.
LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, commended the quick response of officers at the scene and urged motorists to be cautious at railway crossings.
He warned drivers against attempting to cross the tracks when a train is approaching or already in motion, stressing that preservation of human life must remain paramount.
The Authority also appealed to motorists and other road users to obey traffic and railway safety regulations to avoid similar accidents.
