Verdant Zeal Innovention 2026: The Business of Influence, Brands & Consumer Culture in Nigeria
At Verdant Zeal’s 14th Innovention Roundtable, Dr. Tunji Olugbodi and top marketing leaders discussed how authenticity, storytelling and cultural resonance are driving brand success in Nigeria.
Attention is the new currency. And in Nigeria’s brand economy, influence is what converts it to money.
That was the core message at the14th edition of Verdant Zeal’s Innovention Series, held virtually under the theme “The Business of Influence: Brands, Storytelling & Consumer Culture.”
The leading marketing and communications firm, Verdant Zeal Group Limited, brought together top voices in marketing, storytelling and consumer culture to unpack how brands win in 2026.
14 Years of Challenging How We Think About Brands
Since *2012*, the *Innovention Series* has positioned itself as a thought-leadership platform for interrogating Africa’s development and uncovering ideas that drive progress.
This year’s edition focused on one question: What really makes brands successful today?
The answer: *Trust, relevance, and cultural resonance.*
*Key Takeaways: The 4 Rules of Influence in 2026*
Delivering the keynote, Dr. Tunji Olugbodi, Executive Vice Chairman of Verdant Zeal Group, said influence is no longer just a marketing outcome.
“Influence is not just a marketing outcome; it is a catalyst for business expansion,” Dr. Olugbodi stated.
He broke down what’s working for brands right now:
*1. Authenticity Over Hype*
Brands must build narratives hand-in-hand with communities. Consumers can spot fake a mile away. Real connection beats perfect ads.
*2. Storytelling Over Selling*
“Beyond likes, impressions, and hashtags lies a deeper promise: the ability of brands to shape and be shaped by everyday consumer culture.”
The winning brands are creating genuine conversations, not promotional noise.
*3. Local Innovation Wins*
Global templates don’t work anymore. Brands must embed campaigns in uniquely Nigerian contexts.
Dr. Olugbodi cited examples from *Owambe culture to the resilience of the hustle* — moments that actually reflect how Nigerians live.
*4. Consistency and Character*
“Ensuring brands remain true to their promises and identities.”
In a noisy market, character and consistency build long-term loyalty.
*Why Influence = Smart Business*
Dr. Olugbodi backed it up with data. He noted that industry reports show *brands with strong narrative identities outperform peers in loyalty and pricing power*.
But he also issued a warning: Nigerian brands must *balance influence with integrity*.
“Consumer culture should remain a mirror of society rather than a distortion of it,” he said.
The message is clear. Influence without values creates short-term buzz. Influence with integrity builds lasting brands.
Verdant Zeal’s Commitment to Thought Leadership
In his closing remarks, Dr. Olugbodi reaffirmed Verdant Zeal’s commitment to driving dialogue and innovation.
For over a decade, the *Innovention Series* has been the space where marketers, creatives and business leaders come to challenge conventional thinking and shape the future of African brands.
As Nigeria’s consumer market gets younger, more digital and more culturally aware, the brands that will win are those that don’t just sell — they belong.
