NiDCOM Chairman Abike Dabiri-Erewa has mourned veteran journalist Dotun Oladipo, founder of The Eagle Online, who died in Lagos at 56. Read tribute details and his legacy.

The Nigerian journalism community is in mourning following the death of Mr Dotun Oladipo, publisher and founder of The Eagle Online.  He died in Lagos on Monday, August 25, 2026 at the age of 56.

Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman and CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, NiDCOM, described his passing as a huge loss to the media industry.

*A Fine Journalist Committed to Truth

In a condolence statement issued in Abuja on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, Dabiri-Erewa said she received the news with shock and sadness.

“I received the news of Dotun’s sudden passing with great shock and sadness. He was a fine journalist whose commitment to truth, accuracy and professionalism earned him the respect of colleagues across the industry,” she said.

The NiDCOM boss noted that his death is a painful reminder of how fragile life is, and sent prayers to his family, friends and colleagues at The Eagle Online.

Dotun Oladipo’s Career and Media Legacy

Oladipo had nearly three decades of experience in both print and digital journalism.

He started at the Nigerian Tribune  and later worked with Nigerian Compass , The Sun and  Punch Newspapers  where he served as Political Editor.

In 2011, he launched The Eagle Online Under his leadership as publisher and managing editor, the platform grew into one of Nigeria’s respected digital news sites covering politics, business, sports and entertainment.

Beyond The Eagle Online, Oladipo was CEO of Premium Eagle Media Limited. He also served as president of the Guild of Corporate Online Publishers, GOCOP, and was later honoured as Emeritus President. He was the founding president of the Innovative Media Partners Cooperative Multipurpose Society, IMPCMS.

Tribute to a Mentor of Digital Journalism

Dabiri-Erewa commended Oladipo for his role in shaping professional online publishing in Nigeria and for mentoring young digital journalists.

She prayed for the repose of his soul and for God’s comfort for his family during this period.
