In Oshodi, Lagos, there is a name that every parent knows. A name that serious students whisper with respect. A name that has become a gold standard for academic excellence, ADAMS COLLEGE.
Behind that name is one man – Engr. Adams Adebola, Proprietor and Chairman of Adams College, Oshodi, Lagos.
His story is not the story of a man who failed. It is the story of a man who succeeded too well, and then chose a harder road.
A First-Class Brain
Adebola is a First-Class graduate of Computer Engineering / Computer Science from the prestigious Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife.
In a country where a First-Class degree from OAU is a ticket to oil companies, banks, telecoms and foreign scholarships, the world expected him to take a white-collar job, wear a suit, and climb the corporate ladder.
He got those offers. Many of them. Lucrative offers.
He rejected them all.
“I decided to remain in the classroom,” he has often said. “What started as passion has today become a great institution.”
The Mustard Seed – 1994
Adams did not start as a big college. He started as a tutorial.
Immediately after secondary school, even before university, he gathered brilliant young minds from different backgrounds, trained them to become teachers, and began to teach.
In 1994, what is today Adams College began as a small tutorial centre – a mustard seed.
“When we started, we never thought it would become as big as this because we were doing it out of passion; to ensure people were happy, and also to influence lives positively. It was born out of passion to help people who had lost direction education-wise,” Adebola recalls.
Even while he was a student at OAU, the influence of Adams Tutorial remained powerful in Oshodi. As his student-teachers gained admission into higher institutions, other well-trained students replaced them, keeping the legacy alive.
That is how the saying was born in Oshodi: Adams the Great, Oshodi the Great.
From Tutorial To College
As students began to come in from different states across Nigeria, Adebola knew it was time to repackage and rebrand.
The tutorial centre grew into a full-blown college – Adams Tutorial College, now Adams College, Oshodi.
Today, it is about the most sought-after tutorial college in Lagos and its environs. The Lagos State Government itself has attested to the efficacy of the college, on account of its products who are now scattered across various higher institutions in Nigeria and abroad.
300+ Champions Yearly – Without Malpractice
This is the heart of the Adams miracle.
In an age where examination malpractice has become a national shame, Adams College has built its empire on the opposite principle: Meritocracy Still Pays.
Adebola is one of the few proprietors who still preach and promote meritocracy. He personally teaches and personally monitors the progress of his students.
His method is simple but rare: Make learning fun. Make Mathematics creative. Teach entrepreneurship before university. Reward excellence.
The results speak:
– In one recent year alone, University of Lagos admitted 117 graduates of Adams College – all on merit.
– Obafemi Awolowo University admitted 90
– University of Ibadan admitted 86
Today, the college raises 300+ UTME champions yearly – students who score 280 and above, gain admission to Medicine, Engineering, Law, Accounting, Mass Communication and other competitive courses, without cutting corners.
To encourage them, the college rewards its highest JAMB scorers – N300,000 for the best, N200,000 for the runner-up, and more.
More Than A School
Adams Adebola is not just building students. He is building a society.
He recently launched an Education Foundation to help brilliant and exceptional students who cannot afford fees to achieve their dream of attending tertiary institution.
He is also a major brain behind The Articulates School Bag Campaign with the slogan: Don’t drop your school bag, don’t be a dropout”– a campaign against school dropout in Lagos.
And inside Adams College, there is an entrepreneurship class, because Adebola believes:
“When you finish school you still have to learn entrepreneurship. So we are teaching entrepreneurship now before our students get into university.”
The Legacy
From a mustard seed tutorial in 1994 to Adams College today, Engr. Adams Adebola has created employment for thousands of young graduates, raised thousands of professionals, and proved that one teacher can change a community.
He did not build an empire with oil money. He built it with chalk, discipline, and faith.
That is why Prestige News honours him in this edition:
Education Transforms Lives. And Adams Adebola is transforming Nigeria, one student at a time.
