FG, NDDC and Edo Govt Move to Fix Collapsed Benin-Sapele-Warri-Agbor Road
Commuters and businesses along the Edo-Delta corridor may finally get relief. The https://www.works.gov.ng, the https://www.nddc.gov.ng, the Edo State Government and other stakeholders have started a joint intervention on the failed sections of the Benin-Sapele-Warri and Benin-Agbor roads.
The emergency action comes after weeks of complaints about gridlock, vehicle damage, and economic losses on one of Nigeria’s busiest South-South highways.
What triggered the intervention
A joint inspection team led by the Minister of Works, Engr. https://www.works.gov.ng, Edo State Governor, Senator https://edostate.gov.ng, NDDC Managing Director, Dr. https://www.nddc.gov.ng, and members of the Senate and House Committees on Works toured the worst-hit spots last week.
Speaking at the site, Umahi said the project is a direct response to a directive from President https://statehouse.gov.ng. The goal, he said, is to deliver both quick fixes and long-term solutions on the critical corridor.
“The President is concerned about the hardship Nigerians are facing on this road. We are here to intervene now and also ensure the work lasts,” Umahi stated.
NDDC targets 15.4km of failed road
The https://www.nddc.gov.ng said it had already scoped 15.4 kilometers between Benin, Ologbo Junction and Sapele for immediate attention.
Dr. Ogbuku said the commission received multiple reports about motorists stranded for hours on the Benin-Sapele stretch. He described the section as “unmotorable” and a major threat to trade in the Niger Delta.
“NDDC and the Ministry of Works have agreed to work together so that any remedial work follows the original design and can stand the test of time,” Ogbuku said.
He added that the intervention aligns with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Tinubu, which prioritizes infrastructure that improves connectivity, boosts economic activity, and raises living standards across the region.
Why this road matters to Edo and Nigeria
Governor Okpebholo thanked the Federal Government for the swift response. He noted that Edo sits at the gateway linking the South-South, South-East, South-West and Northern Nigeria.
“When this road fails, the whole country feels it. This intervention will arrest further deterioration and restore movement of goods and people,” Okpebholo said.
The Ministry of Works also invited major construction firms operating along the Benin–Asaba axis to join the inspection, signaling that contractors will be mobilized quickly.
What happens next
For now, the focus is on patching the most critical failed portions to restore traffic flow. The joint team said a more comprehensive rehabilitation plan will follow to prevent a repeat of the collapse during the next rainy season.
Residents, transport unions and business owners along the Benin-Sapele-Warri-Agbor route say they are watching closely to see how fast work begins on the ground.
