Former Governor Rauf Aregbesola of Osun State, now Minister of Interior is now becoming infamous in Lagos and Osun politics. Can this be the end of him in both state ?
A reliable source revealed to us that the former governor messed up the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun State and his political career has hit a brick wall.
Our sources added that he never wanted Governor Gboyega Oyetola to succeed him. He was routing for his then Commissioner for Justice, Bashiru Ajibola who is now the senator, representing Osun Central Senatorial District.
We were told that when the party national leader, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu backed Oyetola, he grudgingly accepted. Thereafter, he did everything to frustrate Oyetola’s ambition.
Those in the know told us that Aregbesola lost his Senatorial District to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate in the last election and even lost three local government areas to the PDP in his area as a sitting governor.
Besides, we gathered that Oyetola almost lost the governorship election due to Aregbesola’s mismanagement of APC in the state. Even when the governorship went into a re-run between Senator Adeleke and Oyetola, Aregbesola was aloof.
APC party chieftains told us that it took the intervention of the party national leaders from Abuja and Governor Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti State to appeal to Senator Omisore to deliver his supporters’ votes for Oyetola to win the election.
Those close to him told us that Aregbesola was not comfortable with Senator Omisore taking the glory and was not happy that the APC national intervention was not done through him.
APC top shots told us that he waited to play ‘siddon look’ during the National Assembly election to ensure Senator Omisore did not succeed in becoming the messiah, by that act the party lost the senate and two House of Representatives seats in the state.
We were told that during the presidential election, President Muhammadu Buhari almost lost Osun State to the PDP. He narrowly won the state with 10,000 votes.
Insiders added that Aregbesola was never nominated by Osun State for a ministerial position. He used his northern contacts headed by Governor El-Rufai of Kaduna State and Islam leaders from the north to get the ministerial appointment.
Recently, Aregbesola’s attempt to revive the Mandate Group was thwarted as the APC in Lagos State banned the group.
His name was also removed from Lagos Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC)
From all indications, It shows that Aregbesola has lost his political base in Osun and Lagos States.
