Lagos Taskforce Nabs Dismissed Officer Caught in Viral Video for Alleged Extortion and Impersonation
The Lagos State Taskforce has arrested its dismissed personnel Yahaya Salami popularly known as Adams who was seen in a viral video being apprehended by operatives of the agency in Oshodi over alleged impersonation and extortion.
Salami is a former paramilitary operative attached to the Lagos State Taskforce. According to the agency, he was dismissed from service months ago over alleged gross misconduct including theft, use of fake identity card, extortion of motorists and traders, indiscipline and other acts against the standards of the agency.
Despite his dismissal, he allegedly continued to parade himself as a serving official of the Taskforce and extort members of the public.
The arrest which generated reactions after the video surfaced on social media was carried out at Oshodi Bus Stop Lagos. The agency said previous efforts to track him had been unsuccessful.
According to the Taskforce, operatives accosted the suspect and invited him for questioning but he resisted arrest. The officers through tactical coordination and professionalism with minimal force brought the situation under control and apprehended him.
The Chairman of the Lagos State Taskforce CSP Adetayo Akerele clarified that the individual in the viral video is a former operative who has no affiliation with the agency. He said his continued impersonation is a serious concern as it can mislead the public and undermine confidence in law enforcement.
Akerele said the arrest shows the Taskforce’s resolve to stop dismissed personnel and unauthorized individuals from using its name and authority for unlawful purposes.
He also said the agency’s sensitization and advocacy programs across the 57 Local Government Areas and Local Council Development Areas of Lagos are aimed at educating residents on compliance with laws, promoting orderliness and enhancing public safety. The programs also include public enlightenment for commercial motorcycle operators and road users on restricted routes, driving against traffic and coastal road regulations.
The suspect is expected to be charged to court on Monday after completion of necessary procedures.
The Chairman warned individuals and criminal elements tarnishing the image of the agency through impersonation to desist or face the full wrath of the law. He stressed that the agency will not tolerate dismissed personnel or unauthorized persons parading as serving officers.
He urged members of the public to remain vigilant, verify identities of individuals claiming to be Taskforce officials and report suspicious activities through appropriate channels.
He also called on journalists to uphold responsible journalism by verifying facts and getting all sides before publication to prevent misinformation.
The Lagos State Taskforce said it remains committed to upholding the law, protecting residents and ensuring its name and authority are not abused.
See Something, Say Something.
