From Campus to Global Icon: Joeboy Headlines CNN’s African Voices
This week’s Easter edition of African Voices, the Globacom-sponsored magazine program on CNN, features Nigerian Afro-pop sensation, Joeboy.
In an intimate sit-down in Lagos with host Larry Madowo, the singer-songwriter reflects on his meteoric rise from a determined university student to an international hitmaker.
The interview offers fans a rare look into the personal and professional trajectory of the artist often dubbed “Afrobeats’ lover boy.”
Born Joseph Akinwale Akinfenwa-Donus, Joeboy’s career pivot occurred in 2017 when a viral cover of Ed Sheeran’s “Shape of You” showcased his transition from rap to singing. This digital breakthrough caught the eye of music mogul Mr. Eazi, who invited him to join the emPawa Africa Talent Incubation initiative.
The partnership with emPawa led to a string of massive successes, starting with his 2018 collaboration “Fààjí” and followed by a major signing with Warner Music Africa.
In 2019, Joeboy became a household name with chart-topping singles like “Baby” and “Beginning,” the latter of which garnered over 23 million views on YouTube. These early hits established him as a dominant force in the African pop scene, leading to further successful collaborations with artists like Mayorkun.
The musician has maintained a relentless pace, releasing his debut album, Somewhere Between Beauty & Magic, in 2021, followed by his sophomore project, Body & Soul, in 2023. His evolution as an industry leader reached a new milestone in February 2024 with the launch of his own record label, “Young Legend,” and the release of the acclaimed single “Osadebe.” He has, so far been recognised and celebrated at the All Africa Music Awards and the Soundcity MVP Awards.
Viewers can catch this inspiring episode on DSTV Channel 401 throughout the week. The initial broadcast airs Saturday at 7:30 a.m., with several repeat airings scheduled for Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday. The program will continue to run through next week, ensuring fans have multiple opportunities to witness the budding star.
