I Can’t Control My 50-Year-Old Daughter’s Life – Charly Boy Replies Critics Over Daughter’s Same-Sex Engagement

Veteran Nigerian entertainer, Charles Oputa, popularly known as Charly Boy, has responded to critics over his daughter’s engagement to her female partner, saying he cannot control how his 50-year-old daughter lives her life.

Charly Boy had earlier on Friday announced his daughter’s engagement and asked the public to wish her and her partner well, a post that generated mixed reactions on social media.

In a follow up post on Instagram on Friday, September 18, 2026, the entertainer said his daughter is old enough to know what she wants and make her own choices.

He wrote in pidgin, How you wan tell 50-year-old woman how to live her life? At that age, she don already live enough life to know herself.

According to him, as a father, he can only advise and express his views but cannot control the life of another adult.

As a father, I fit advise. I fit talk my mind. But I no get remote control for another adult’s life, he said.

Charly Boy disclosed that his daughter has given him five grandchildren and a great-grandson and remains his daughter irrespective of her choices. He noted that she had faced difficulties in a previous marriage before moving on to her current relationship.

He added that he cannot choose happiness for his daughter, recalling that his own father could not stop him from becoming the person he wanted to be.

My own father could not stop me from becoming Charly Boy the man I wanted to become. So who am I to stand in front of my daughter and try to control the life she has chosen for herself? he asked.

The singer maintained that everyone deserves freedom to pursue happiness.

I wish her happiness. I wish everybody happiness. At the end of the day, na love remain, he added.

He urged people to live according to their convictions and seek happiness in their own way.
