NDDC Trains and Empowers Persons With Disabilities in Akwa Ibom, Vows Stronger Inclusion

The Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC, has carried out an empowerment programme for Persons Living with Disabilities in Akwa Ibom State as part of its push for inclusive development in the region.

The programme was held in Uyo to mark the International Day for Persons with Disabilities. Speaking at the event, the NDDC Director for Akwa Ibom State, Engr. Evong Evong, said the Commission remains committed to promoting inclusion, empowerment, equality and better livelihoods for persons with disabilities and other vulnerable groups. He said this will be achieved through advocacy, capacity building, partnerships and community-based projects.

According to Evong, disability should not limit anyone from achieving their goals. He said the aim is to equip youths and women with disabilities with knowledge, skills, resources and confidence to become self-reliant and contribute to their communities.

He noted that the initiative aligns with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, which focuses on equal opportunities and creating sustainable pathways for youths and women with disabilities to take part in social and economic growth.

Also speaking, the NDDC Director of Culture and Women Affairs, Mrs Imoni Ahunna, said building an inclusive society means ensuring persons with disabilities have equal access to education, entrepreneurship, healthcare, employment and other opportunities.

Imoni stated that the outreach was designed to support youths and women living with disabilities through skills development, advocacy and access to opportunities. She added that the true measure of a society is how it supports its most vulnerable people.

She commended the NDDC Board and Management for their work in the Niger Delta under the Renewed Hope Agenda. She also said she will forward a request from the Special Assistant to the Akwa Ibom State Government on Persons With Disabilities to the NDDC management for action.

The Special Assistant to the Akwa Ibom State Government on Persons With Disabilities, Hon. Nene Bassey, appreciated NDDC for its consistent support to persons with disabilities in the state. He urged the Commission to consider employing persons with disabilities and to make it easier for them to benefit from the NDDC scholarship scheme.

Beneficiaries at the event shared their experiences. Mr. Godwin Effiong said the training opened his eyes to his abilities despite his disability. Mrs. Helen Jeremiah said she gained practical knowledge that will help improve her income and boost her confidence.

The NDDC said it will continue to implement programmes that ensure no group is left behind in the development of the Niger Delta.
